Artist Manifesto: Why I Make Art

I am interested in the interior world and also the unseen parts of the exterior world

I am interested in making art in an exploratory, loose fashion, sometimes non-objective, sometimes figurative.

The art I make is more about about the design elements of art making than about the subject. The subject is secondary though still important in the way it informs the elemental choices of color, line, texture….

There might be a story implied but I am not focused on that, either as I chose what to paint or as I paint.

I like to examine the meaning of the art object after the making of it—almost like interpreting a dream. The meaning will be different for everyone depending on their experience.

I enjoy forms that create a sense of interiority and underlying energetic resonances that come through the elements of design: colors chosen, character of line and shape, quality of texture or pattern, and contrast through value shifts and juxtapositions of details that are different.

In the end I make art to please myself, but I hope, in the honest exploration of materials, composition, structure and design, that I am able to communicate something of a universal nature that evokes aliveness, curiosity, and inspirations that might range from provocative to soothing or even reassuring.

For me the aim of art is to make the invisible visible, to take us beneath the surface of our lived perceptions and deepen our felt sense of being in the world.
